Soma is a drug that is also sold as carisoprodol. It is a muscle relaxant that can relieve stiffness and pain that is caused by muscle injuries, strains, sprains or spasms. Soma is often prescribed by health care professionals such as family doctors, neurologists, surgeons or psychiatrists to help patients manage their muscular pain more effectively.

Contra-indications
Do not use soma if you have acute intermittent porphyria.

What happens if I miss the dose of medication?
Take the dose immediately after you remember it. If the time for taking the next dose of medication is coming, do not take the missed dose. You should wait till the time for the next dose comes. Do not take the double dose. Try to take the medication once every four hours.
Possible Side Effects
Soma may cause dizziness, vertigo, ataxia, tremor, agitation, irritability, headache, depressive reactions, syncope, and insomnia. Allergic or idiosyncratic reactions occasionally develop. They are usually seen within the period of the first to fourth dose in patients having had no previous contact with the drug. Skin rash, erythema multiforme, pruritus, eosinophilia, and fixed drug eruption with cross reaction to meprobamate have been reported with Soma. Severe reactions have been manifested by asthmatic episodes, fever, weakness, dizziness, angioneurotic edema, smarting eyes, hypotension, and anaphylactoid shock.

Store at controlled room temperature 15°-30°C (59°-86°F). Dispense in a tight container.

What is the most important information I should know about Soma?
This medication may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Carisoprodol should never be given to another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it. You may have withdrawal symptoms when you stop using carisoprodol after using it over a long period of time. Do not stop using this medication suddenly without first talking to your doctor. You may need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely. Carisoprodol can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase drowsiness and dizziness caused by carisoprodol.
